On-board Edge AI Processing of Satellite EO Imagery Data
Analysis of Satellite Imagery has various applications such as- environmental monitoring, agriculture, urban-planning, disaster management, defense and intelligence etc. Traditionally, majority of remote-sensing data collected by satellites in orbit is transmitted back to ground stations on earth with minimal processing in-space. With increasing number of space-borne platforms, the burden of computational processing on ground-stations is becoming humongous. Data processing and computation on-board satellites in space is challenging due to factors such as high power consumption and latency to process the data. However, benefits of processing data in-space outweigh its challenges. In-space processing will enable transmission of only valuable insights rather than redundant or unimportant pixels. This will help free-up the precious bandwidth and storage at ground segment. The advent of modern AI algorithms (such as deep learning) for processing of satellite imagery has opened doors for large scale automated data analysis. In this study we outline and benchmark onboard edge-AI processing techniques directly implemented on-board satellites. Projects such as ESA's PhiSat-1 is one such technology breakthrough. We discuss the challenges associated with using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components like specialized hardware and software, and compatibility issues for advanced on-board processing. Finally, we also provide roadmap for future research and development in this area in the Indian context.

BlackSky: Real Time Dynamic Monitoring & Analytics Deliver Insights within Minutes
The world is moving away from static mapping to near-real-time dynamic monitoring and BlackSky is helping to lead the way. BlackSky is a provider of near-real-time satellite imagery, analytics, and insights that supports our customers with timely geospatial intelligence solutions. BlackSky delivers on-demand, high frequency imagery, monitoring and analytics of the most critical and strategic locations and events on Earth. BlackSky's online platform allows customers to have the ability to directly task and receive images without any human intervention. There is also the option of adding Machine Learning analytics that can detect aircraft, ships, and buildings to an image order, and have the detection results delivered together with an image. The platform also leverages multiple data sources including satellites, news feeds, social media, and other emerging capabilities like tip-and-cue services. In addition to imagery and value-added services delivered through an online platform, BlackSky also has a site monitoring service. This is a managed service that allows a customer to select sites from a curated library of airports, ports, and other infrastructure for monitoring at regular intervals and receive reports on activity in these sites. Unlike other earth observation satellites, which are in a sun-synchronous orbit, BlackSky's on-demand constellation of 16 satellites are launched in mid-inclination orbits that allow us to image any area-of-interest up to 15 times a day from dawn to dusk, providing high temporal resolution in collection and enabling us to observe events as they develop. For example, in the wake of the earthquake in Turkey and cyclone in New Zealand, BlackSky has supplied imagery to first responders and other stakeholders, in support of rescue and recovery efforts. BlackSky's short latency of up to 90 minutes between image collection and delivery supports rescue and recovery operations by ensuring timely delivery of up-to-date images to better support decision making on the ground. BlackSky is relied upon by U.S. and international government agencies, commercial businesses, and non-government organizations around the world.
